Sexual Problems Down Under: performance anxiety, premature ejaculation and vaginismus

A former columnist for the Beast’s ‘sexy time’ and sexual health expert Matty Silver has written a book detailing the ins and outs (pun intended) of sex in Australia. Sexual Problems Down Under: performance anxiety, premature ejaculation and vaginismus are topics she frequently offers advice for. With forty short chapters offering readers tips, advice and important information silver aims to foster healthy attitudes towards sex in Australia. Matty Silver attempts to de-misty barriers around sex and taboos, making people more comfortable, open-minded and understanding to the fact that there is no “normal.” The book acts as an excellent conversation starter for lovers, parents and teenagers to discuss all sorts of issues, anxieties and questions. Let's look at some of the stuff she discusses:
Performance anxiety
Performance anxiety occurs when a man anticipates a problem during sexual acts and as a result, becomes anxious or panics when being sexually active. This affects men regardless of age, occupation, relationship or sexual orientation. Silver even suggests that many men who have been diagnosed with low sexual drive may have been affected by performance anxiety and simply avoid sex.
Premature ejaculation
Being one of the most common sexual problems faced by 25-30% of men at some stage in their life, premature ejaculation is a condition that should be discussed not ignored or shamed. While it may be difficult to talk about premature ejaculation, as it often is so tied through to one's self-confidence and even be brought on by performance anxiety. Medication is a last resort treatment, as there are many practices that can help men to think healthy towards sex and their organs and even practices such as applying pressure to the tip to delay ejaculation.
Relationship counselling
This is actually useful even for young relationships. Whether entering a phase of the conflict in your life enduring misunderstandings or ongoing stress sometimes communication between partners needs to be addressed to help one another to ease the situation. Other common areas of conflict are lack of romance, companionship, fun, mismatched sex drives, and more. It’s not reserved for divorcees, rick couples and those trying to fix something that's broken relationship counselling can really be helpful in addressing issues between partners to improve a relationship.
Vaginismus
Women suffering from vaginismus find sexual intercourse painful or even unsuccessful. The thought of intercourse being painful could even be so frightening as to bring on fear of sex. The key feature of vaginismus is the involuntary contraction of muscles surrounding the entrance to the vagina making intercourse near impossible or incredibly painful. Items such as a finger or tampon can even cause pain and have issues being inserted. Vaginismus has been highlighted to be the main cause of unconsummated marriages. Treatment involves un-learning the fear-contraction reflex, keeping the pelvic floor muscles relaxed through exercises, and counselling.
Beyond these intense subjects, the book covers a range of topics providing insight for all ages.
